light and Drake
Thursday, 03 April 2008
There's a beautiful light around this time of year... I live in a top floor apartment (which is great for Guy Fawkes night fireworks) with a beautiful big old tree growing right up past my window, which is wonderful for watching the seasons change. Every year at this time, a sunlight promising summer lands on this tree remembering winter and, without fail, I put on Nick Drake records. It's funny how music transports you... no matter where I am, when I'm listening to Nick Drake I always feel like I'm here by the window... However, it's very heavy stuff (hence John Martyn's song 'Solid Air': written about Nick) and invariably, after a few days listening I want to go into exile... live in a cave... grow a beard. Not that I can grow a beard mind you, well not a good one anyway. Maybe an Emperor Ming sort of effort could be achieved but not much more...I went by a friends house today and couldn't help but succumb to the gravitational pull of her trampoline.... why do most people stop 'PLAYING' once they get past twenty odd? I think kids have got it bang on when it comes to play... no boundaries and no fear... I bounced like a ten year old for as long as I could without throwing up... Needless to say it didn't take long before I started trying backward summersaults. I had them down too, until I started getting blasé about it and trying to do one after the other... I grew up fast when on the last summersault I nearly went flying off sideways into the fence... instead I landed right on the bar with my shins.... I went back into the house, exhausted and exhilarated, limping and white as a sheet! "can I get a cup of tea please... and perhaps a paper?.... something grown up if you have it..."
