a letter from Jules
Tuesday, 25 November 2008
I'm working in the studio for a short film called 'A Little Faith' about a guy who finds solace in dancing (essentially). It's been an interesting process as the film is already made and the dance scenes cut, using old Isley Brothers and Marvin Gaye tracks, I think I may have mentioned this already (?)... anyway, being that the dance scenes were cut to it, I had to replicate the tempos in the songs I would write. It's never occurred to me to write like this ever before, which is ridiculous, surely you should be trying every angle possible. I suppose I just get used to my own way, which is a very lazy way I must say... I do things that I like until a song falls from a tree like an apple in autumn, or I fall into one like a pot hole in a country road. I'm very happy with the results, so I reckon I'll be doing it this way again....I was just sitting down to email Jules and ask him could I cover his song for the Twisted Christmas gig when I got an email from him (he's on holiday in the USA).... it said
"I saw this..... and thought of you"
I first thought it was in reference to my album being called hope, but now I'm beginning to wonder if maybe he thinks I want to kill myself? or even worse, that maybe I have a future in Crisis Counseling!!!!

Gaz replied about 23 hours after. That's a very powerful message indeed. It's sad to think that things are so bad for so many people that a sign like this even has to exist but I guess that's the real world. On a completely different note, what a wonderful time to be in the US. Thanksgiving is a great holiday - kinda like Christmas back home without the Carols or the "Only Fools and Horses" re-runs.
Jay replied 1 day after.I cant help but laugh at "The Consequence of Jumping off this Bridge are Fatal and Tragic"... Makes you wonder if somebody once jumped off it thinking there could be an alternative outcome!!

Mary O'Neill replied 5 days after.I don't think it's a lazy way of coming up with a song. I think thats when the most true, real, magical, deep, fun, happy, songs come from. The times when you least expect them too. You can sometimes tell when too much thought and trying was put into a song and it just doesn't play right. Your way is the best way. I love your music Foy Vance. Much love from America. ~Mary
